What can you learn from successful business owners? Are you guilty of the tempting trap of associating only with other legal nurse consultants? Are you seeking out other business owners through the Chamber of Commerce, networking groups and other small business owners?
Some small businesses in your geographic area are thriving. Do you wonder what they are doing different from their competitors to attract and retain clients? What lessons can you apply to marketing to attorneys? Go outside the legal nurse consulting industry to get answers. Find smart people in other industries, in other businesses that appear to be successful. Watch how they market, advertise, and interact with their clients.
Find out what you can learn from successful business owners
I challenge you: go find them. Get your own little mastermind group of 6-8 people together. You could meet for coffee or lunch from time to time or over the phone and just throw marketing ideas and small business struggles on the table. If you get the right people there it’s absolutely magical.
Legal nurse consultants don’t often think about going outside of our field to meet other people who have similar issues. We talk a lot within our profession but we don’t realize how much we can learn from people who are running their own businesses and dealing with these same issues.
My business changed for the better when I found the National Speakers Association (NSA) through a nurse that I know who is a member. It’s probably the biggest thing that I did to open up my eyes to a whole world that exists of supportive people who are speakers — speakers are, in fact, “experts who speak”.
My exposure to NSA made me aware of internet marketers and got on some mailing lists. I formed a mastermind of NSA speakers in 2008 and continue to run that group. I joined a couple of coaching programs which also expanded my concepts. This has made me much more aware of providing good content and focusing on the needs of the target market. It taught me to ask, “What can I do to help you resolve your issues?”
Great marketing is great marketing – whether you’re a legal nurse consultant or a podiatrist or a dentist or a guy running a hair salon. The basic concepts are the same. They’re adaptable to any business and they work. Get out of your niche and talk to other small business owners. You will be glad you did.
