Mastering the Deposition: Strategies and Demonstration for Legal Nurse Consultants

Many nursing expert witnesses approach their depositions with uncertainty—unsure what to expect, how to respond to attorney tactics, or how to stay composed under pressure. Even experienced experts can find depositions stressful, struggling to anticipate questions or present complex medical information clearly and confidently. These challenges can undermine your credibility and effectiveness in the eyes of attorneys and juries.

This session will remove that anxiety by giving attendees practical tools and a firsthand demonstration of how to excel as an expert witness during deposition testimony. You’ll discover how to prepare thoroughly, manage difficult questions, communicate your opinions with clarity, and project confidence throughout the process.

Pat Iyer will walk through proven strategies based on years of deposition experience and then lead a live demonstration showing how a skilled expert handles questioning. You’ll observe not just what to say—but how to say it—to convey professionalism, authority, and calm control.

By the end of this one-hour session, you’ll walk away with:

  • A clear understanding of what happens during a deposition.
  • Practical steps to prepare and present yourself as a credible expert.
  • Techniques to handle aggressive questioning with confidence.
  • Real-world insight from a demonstration that brings the process to life.

Whether you’ve never testified or want to sharpen your performance, this session will give you the confidence and know-how to excel when it matters most.

Pat Iyer MSN RN LNCC served attorneys for 25 years as an expert witness, testifying both as to nursing liability and as an FRE Rule 1006 Witness to summarize medical records. Through the process, she learned how to withstand pointed and sometimes heated questioning, convey information confidently, and sigh with relief when she heard, “I have no more questions.” Pat is a past president of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants and the author of How to be a Successful Expert Witness, Second Edition.

Showcase Your Expertise: Using AI to Create Powerful Content that Attracts Attorneys

Many LNCs know they need to market their expertise—but feel unsure about what to post, how to write about their closed cases, or how to make their knowledge stand out online. Others hesitate because writing takes too much time or they’re not confident in their ability to create attention-grabbing content. Without consistent, high-quality posts or articles, even experienced LNCs can remain invisible to the attorneys who need their skills.

This session eliminates that uncertainty by showing you exactly how to share your expertise effectively—and how to use AI to make the process faster and easier. You’ll learn what types of content demonstrate credibility to attorneys, how to adapt that content for websites, LinkedIn, and other platforms, and how to maintain a professional voice while letting your personality shine through.

Pat Iyer will provide step-by-step examples of how AI tools can help you brainstorm, draft, and polish content that reflects your unique perspective and experience. You’ll see how to turn your case insights, lessons learned, and professional knowledge into posts, articles, and videos that attract attention and referrals.

By the end of this one-hour session, you’ll know:

  • What types of content attorneys find most valuable.
  • How to write and share posts that position you as an expert.
  • Practical ways to use AI tools to save time and spark ideas.
  • How to plan and maintain a consistent presence that builds trust.

You’ll leave with a clear roadmap for showing your expertise—and the confidence to create professional content that helps attorneys remember your name when they need a legal nurse consultant.

Pat Iyer has been writing content to attract attorneys since 1989 when she started her independent LNC business, Med League Support Services. As the former owner of that company, she blogged weekly since 2009, and prepared numerous opt in reports. In this session, she shares what she’s learned about focusing on attorney needs and repurposing content. She is the author of AI-Powered Videos for LNCs and the AI-Powered Videos for LNCs Workbook.

Exposing Nursing Home Fraud: How It Happens and How LNCs Can Help

Many legal nurse consultants have reviewed nursing home records that just don’t add up—but few realize how often those inconsistencies point to fraud. Understaffing, false charting, and billing discrepancies aren’t just administrative problems—they can reveal systemic deception that harms residents and misuses taxpayer funds. Yet identifying these patterns requires a trained eye, an understanding of facility data, and the courage to confront wrongdoing.

Attorney and former prosecutor Ernest Tosh will open the curtain on the world of nursing home fraud, showing how it is concealed, how it affects care, and how legal nurse consultants can play a vital role in uncovering the truth. Drawing on years of work with state attorney generals and fraud task forces, he’ll explain the financial motives behind understaffing, the manipulation of federal five-star ratings, and the falsification of medical records and billing.

You’ll gain a deeper understanding of:

  • How fraud manifests in documentation, billing, and staffing patterns.
  • The difference between careless charting and deliberate falsification.
  • What data sources can expose fraud—and how LNCs can help attorneys interpret them.
  • The potential role of whistleblowers in holding facilities accountable.

This session will give you a rare insider’s look at the business practices behind nursing home care and equip you with insights you can use to strengthen your case analyses and support attorneys pursuing justice for vulnerable residents.

Peritonitis, Leaks, and Ruptures: An LNC’s Guide to High-Risk Abdominal Cases

Abdominal catastrophes represent some of the most challenging—and most litigated—events in medicine. Our presenter, Dr. Stephen Cohen, will take LNCs through the critical signs and symptoms of conditions such as ruptured colons, leaking anastomoses, volvulus, lacerated spleens, and ruptured appendices. We will explore what happens clinically when peritonitis develops, why subtle warning signs are often overlooked, and how delays in diagnosis or escalation can drastically change outcomes. By understanding how these complications unfold, LNCs can better evaluate whether the standard of care was met or breached.

You will leave with practical tools to screen abdominal catastrophe cases with confidence, regardless of their level of experience. You’ll learn what to look for in records, how to recognize red flags in nursing documentation and physician notes, and how to distinguish between unavoidable complications and potential negligence. This talk will sharpen your ability to identify merit early, support your attorney clients effectively, and bring greater clarity to complex, high-stakes medical cases.

Learning Objectives for LNCs

  1. Identify red flags in medical records that suggest an evolving abdominal catastrophe (e.g., peritonitis, anastomotic leak, volvulus) and recognize when timely escalation should have occurred.
  2. Evaluate the standard of care in abdominal emergency cases by distinguishing between unavoidable complications and potential negligence related to delayed diagnosis or intervention.
  3. Apply case-screening strategies to determine merit, focusing on documentation patterns, subtle warning signs, and patient outcomes that commonly drive malpractice claims in abdominal catastrophes.
