It all began with a phone call that changed my life. I began my career as a medical surgical expert nursing witness in 1987. One day in 1989, I was asked a question that changed my life. An attorney called me to ask me to review an emergency department case. After explaining that I did not have experience working in an emergency department, I thought of a terrific emergency department clinical specialist I knew.
She said she was interested in taking the case, and so I connected her and the attorney. Then it hit me, like a lightning bolt: I did both of them a nice favor, but got nothing out of the exchange. I realized that I could refer expert witnesses for cases I was not able to review, and make a profit on every one of those experts.
Even more importantly, I knew my income was limited to the number of billable hours in a week. But if I had experts generating income for me during that same week, my income would take a huge leap. 
In 1989, I founded a legal nurse consulting firm to supply the insatiable need for expert witnesses. In the beginning, I felt like you – not sure where to start, not sure how to find the experts and not sure how to bill for the experts. Gradually, through trial and error, I learned how to structure a profitable model. I found out how to create agreements that would entice experts to work for us, how to make money even if the expert would not allow us to bill for her, and how to avoid misunderstandings by explaining the expert witness location service to clients.
The emergency department clinical specialist was my first expert!
