Having learned the DME trade as a subcontractor, including for Silvia Aninye, this book is long overdue. There has been no other subject matter resource available like this, until now. Pat Iyer is a well-known and recognized expert in the legal nurse consulting field and Silvia Aninye is a legal nurse whose main business focus is DMEs. They have collaborated, compiled, and written a comprehensive reference guide for anyone who already attends DMEs or would like to begin attending and subcontracting DMEs to build their business. From experienced LNCs to those just entering this exciting and lucrative area of legal nurse consulting, you are in the right place.

This book gives very detailed information about the DME process and how to conduct oneself as an observer. The chapters are broken down into easily understandable sections about each step in the process. The authors even include specific replies to common objections the physician performing the exam may make. As a bonus, there are chapters addressing the business side of LNC work including marketing, client retention, and the financial side. This book is a must-read for LNCs new to DME work but also has useful tips for the more experienced LNCs.

The written examples in the back of the book are of great value to those with limited experience in preparing DME reports. Through interesting examples and discussion, the book explores ethics and physician bias while helping prepare the DME observer for depositions and trial testimony. In summary, I would recommend this book as a guide for anyone interested in starting their own DME observation practice.

Reading Defense Medical Exams Made Easy: A Painless Guide for LNCs made me feel more confident about observing DMEs. As a workers' compensation case manager, I coordinated IMEs/DMEs, which included locating appropriate physicians as well as organizing and delivering medical records prior to observing the appointments. I only took copious notes by hand and reported in detail what I observed. If I had this book as a resource, I would have felt more prepared knowing which tests or exams would be used for each specialty.

The authors gave excellent case studies, report templates, and worksheets to bring to DME observations. The state-specific regulations also provided guidelines on what to look for in my state. The book also contained valuable tips on how a DME observer role can expand an LNC's business. I look forward to including DME observer as one of my specialties!
