How to Know When You’ve Become an LNC
As I revised the Path to Legal Nurse Consulting for its second edition, I asked LNCs to describe when they knew they had become an LNC. Here is a sampling of what they had to say.
You proofread every letter you write and start changing words for a better clarity.
M. Thomas (Tom) Quail You are able to successfully work independently as a legal nurse consultant with the desired income.
Katherine Quinby The stacks of medical records in your office start to become taller than your children.
C. Scott Rajnic You get a personal letter from the lawyer in a very large case that you helped with. The lawyer successfully avoided trial. It was all because of the expertise you contributed to the case.
Lou Ann Rau You meet a new MD and your first words are “Can I have your CV?”
You find yourself screaming at the computer scream “No, she didn’t just document that!”
You ride in the car going on vacation with the laptop on your lap because you have 3 hours that you can get through records.
Gyalia Rutledge Everything at the hospital shift you’re pulling now has potential legal ramifications. Sondra Rutman
You have several attorneys calling you to review their cases on a routine bases and then they refer you to their colleagues.
Pauline Sanders You are always thinking of how to get the next case and of unique methods to better market your skills.
Deborah Schmiedl You can speak comfortably and confidently with attorneys, knowing your expertise as a medical professional with LNC training will make a substantial difference in how a case is viewed and understood.
Jennifer Smith You see the Fedex delivery person back into your driveway, open the back of the Fedex truck and unload 20 boxes of records and you do not even flinch….just another day in your LNC office. As an LNCC, I am confident that all 20 boxes of records will be quickly and accurately reviewed and a solid report will follow.
Colleen Sosteri You eat your breakfast, start to work on your cases and the next thing you know is that your children are asking, “Are we going to have dinner sometime tonight?”
Karen Tomczak You start to get repeat clients from attorneys you have worked for.
Attorneys you have never worked with refer you to new attorney clients with the utmost faith.
You have no guilt of using the extra bedroom in your house as an office instead of getting a roommate.
You have the good fortune to even consider getting a subcontractor.
Wendy Votroubek You can live comfortably on the steady income AND live just as comfortably knowing the quality of your work product is always honest, thorough and sound.
Lynne Woodside You have gained the respect of the legal community in your area.
Leola Wright You get a call from two attorneys in the same week who tell you that they each won a huge award because of the information you uncovered during your reviews.
Debbie Wuerl When an attorney gazes at you in awe regarding your thorough assessment of the records.
