Business Principles for Legal Nurse Consultants

Patricia Iyer, MSN, RN, LNCC was the chief editor of this text. She received her diploma in nursing from Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield, NJ, and her bachelors and masters degrees in nursing from University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Iyer’s career as an author began in 1980 with the publication of her first article. She has coauthored and edited many books for nurses and attorneys, including Medical Legal Aspects of Pain and Suffering, Nursing Home Litigation: Investigation and Case Preparation, Nursing Malpractice, and Nursing Documentation: A Nursing Process Approach. Her nursing process text has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese. Ms. Iyer served on the board of directors of AALNC for 5 years, including one year as president. Additionally she was the first chair of the Educational Steering Committee (for a term of two years) and received the distinguished Lifetime Achievement Service Award from AALNC in 2005. Ms. Iyer founded Med League Support Services, Inc. which provides legal nurse consulting services to plaintiff and defense attorneys handling medical and nursing negligence claims, products liability and personal injury, as well as criminal cases. She sold the company in 2015.

Jan Aken, RN, IBCLC was an associate editor for this project. Ms. Aken received her nursing diploma from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing, Minot, North Dakota. She attended Everett Community College and City University, Seattle, WA. Ms. Aken has been an Obstetrical Nurse for over 36 years working in all areas of obstetrics and she currently works per diem in the Birth Center at a community hospital. Ms. Aken is a board certified lactation consultant and has retained that certification for over 12 yrs. She is published in the Journal of Human Lactation. Currently Ms. Aken currently writes obstetrical articles for a LNC newsletter. Ms. Aken has been an independent legal nurse consultant for 4 years and owns her own business, Puget Sound Legal Nurse Consultants. Ms. Aken served as secretary for the Puget Sound Chapter AALNC and is presently serving her second term as president of the chapter. She has been a member and served on the AALNC Education Task Force. She is an associate member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association and Washington Defense Trial Lawyers in Washington.
Kathie W. Condon, MSN, BSN, RN was an associate editor for this text. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Mississippi Delta Community College at Morehead, Mississippi. She continued her education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham receiving a BSN and MSN. Ms. Condon has been an independent legal nurse consultant for 6 years. She is past president of the Greater Birmingham Alabama Chapter of AALNC and is currently serving as treasurer.
